It's just appalling to know that we did not send "Maynila: Sa Kuko ng Liwanag", "Himala" and "Oro, Plata, Mata" to name a few, which I think are some of the best Filipino movies out there. Thy Womb, as what they claim, is not qualified because the theatrical run of an entry should be at least 7 days, but I think it's the most deserving of all. I don't think "Transit" is getting shortlisted this year and though OTJ is getting rave reviews now by international critics, I don't think it's gonna do wonders either. Sayang ang Thy Womb. And sayang din yung mga films natin noon. Instead of "Kinatay," Mendoza's team submitted "Lola"--which I still believe would have been our best bet--for consideration this year. They're probably aware that the Academy wouldn't warm up to a film like "Kinatay" but might like "Lola" more, and he still has his now famous name attached to it. Sadly, the FAP Oscar Committee knows much less about how to select a film for Oscar consideration. They can't understand that the type of humor shown in films like "Ded Na Si Lolo" goes way over the heads of foreign voters, unappreciated and misunderstood.evermoonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04665189293344870822noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15355917.post-74993330895916541182009-11-02T20:36:53.238-08:002009-11-02T20:36:53.238-08:00This comment has been removed by the author.evermoonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04665189293344870822noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15355917.post-50345614836976999582009-10-17T09:54:12.043-07:002009-10-17T09:54:12.043-07:00Excellent blogging! It IS...Hey, thanks for taking the time to read it!

It IS frustrating, because we can and actually have produced a lot of films that deserve international recognition. Hopefully, Mendoza's string of victories will change that.

On the Oscar front, FAP failed to capitalize on a great opportunity yet again, choosing the amusing yet ultimately "non-Oscar-y" "Ded Na Si Lolo" over Venezia finalist, Mendoza-directed "Lola." I believe it takes a "movement" from our filmmakers to get noticed.

Hopefully, this resurgence of Philippine films in international film festivals would bring home the nomination.

For the year 2009, i believe we should send SERBIS. It is the most controversial Filipino film to date. If Sean Penn, head of the jury of the Cannes Film Festival highly endorses the film (as well as Thai filmmaker Apichatpong)---he could lobby for it to get a nomination.

It may not be a film that represents the "good" in our country. But so are other films that got noticed or were nominated. (but now, I am thinking CITY OF GOD, and 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS, 2 DAYS are not nominated :-)

But what the heck, lets just hope we see the Philippines get a nomination at least before the Oscars reach 100. :-)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06965371229867516146noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15355917.post-21600595441975623962008-12-31T15:54:00.000-08:002008-12-31T15:54:00.000-08:00thanks for your insightful and very well researche...thanks for your insightful and very well researched take on the Philippine entry for the Oscars.

I agree on generally all the points. I always try to see as many of the Foreign Film entries each year as possible, and a lot of other international film buffs do too, so I think it's very important for countries like the Philippines to keep sending movies even without a realistic chance at a nomination.

Your analysis year-by-year is really interesting since I will likely never have a chance to see films like "Harvest Home" and "Donsol" that got an English DVD release. I have seen 5 of the last 8 nominated films (Anak, Crying Ladies, Dekada 70, Maximo Oliveros and Saranggola). All were decent films (Dekada 70 the best, Anak & Crying Ladies the weakest), and although I didn't think any were deserving of an Oscar nomination I am glad I got to see the "Best Picture" of the year from the Philippines.

I agree that the Foreign Film Committee seems to have a pro-European (or is it anti-Asian?) bias, and also that the Committee just does not appreciate low-budget digitaly films. However, the main problem is competition. There used to be 20-25 countries competing; now the number tends to top 60.

The Philippines' turn will come eventually (though definitely not this year when I fear the Philippines will send "SERVIS"!). I look forward to reading your views on this year's Filipino race.

AD in TOKYOdzong2https://www.blogger.com/profile/03679143338955036334noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15355917.post-37216599004027873972008-08-18T12:38:00.000-07:002008-08-18T12:38:00.000-07:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15355917.post-14260260439122045672008-04-16T02:45:00.000-07:002008-04-16T02:45:00.000-07:00Oo nga e, kaya lang pinagawa ko lang sa kaibigan k...Oo nga e, kaya lang pinagawa ko lang sa kaibigan ko yung layout, so di ko pa napapalitan.
